This is the record of dishes I cooked in Japanese week and the subsequent struggle between Gourmet Boy and my struggle.
Mon: Temaki zushi (Hand-rolled sushi)、Dorayaki
【Result】
① Temaki zushi : ×
→ Regarding temaki zushi, he seemed to hate the style, rolling food by himself.
He forced the tuna and cucumber into an excessive amount of rice, and the moment he took a bite, he seemed irritated and left the table.
He said, ”I want to eat normal sushi!” I know that when he has tacos, he usually rolls them himself… What’s the difference?
② Dorayaki : 〇
→ Traditional dorayaki is usually sandwiched only sweet red bean. However, this time, I added fresh cream making it easy to eat for the Australian kids. I couldn’t buy Japanese style pancake mix and sweet red bean at the supermarkets around my home. Therefore, I made them myself based on the internet.
I’m not sure whether the kids accepted the taste of sweet red beans but they had all of the dorayaki. They must like them.
Tue: Karaage (Fried Chicken), Sweet potato
【Result】
① Karaage : ◎
→ I was nervous because the batter was soggy, but he ate it happily.
Mr. Gourmet Boy: “Thank you!”
I even received words of gratitude. Yay!!
② Sweet potato : ×
→ In Japan, there is a sweet called sweet potato. I made it with Sister. When they saw it, their reaction was good but when they tried it, it seemed that they didn’t really like it.
Wed: Japanese curry & Hotcake (Japanese pancake)
【Result】
① Japanese curry : ×
→ There are almost no Japanese children who don’t like curry!
I can definitely say that. I used “Golden Curry” packet which has a mild taste, which I could buy at the supermarket at that time. I thought it would go well, but it turned out to be a huge disappointment! He finished after only a few bites.
Moreover, even Sister who usually enjoys most of my dishes, also took only a few bites. Why? It’s delicious, the curry…
It was a dish that made me feel that there was a big gap between them and Japanese children.
② Hotcake(Japanese pancake) : ◎
→Since they didn’t have much dinner, I decided to make hotcakes that I had planned to make another day.
They fell in love with the hotcakes, which were thicker and fluffier than the pancakes they usually have. I was depressed because of the curry, but I was able to make up for it with the pancakes.
Thu: Napolitan (Neapolitan)
【Result】
・Napolitan pasta : ◎
→ Second half of Japanese week!
I thought it would be difficult for them to continue having rice, so I cooked a pasta dish.
It was their first time trying pasta which is flavored with tomato sauce but they seemed to like it and ate a large amount of it.
Fri: Hamburg
【Result】
・Hamburg : ◎◎
→ On the last day, it’s definitely the hamburg!!
Kids love meat, and moreover a lot of melted cheese…
As a result, it was very popular as expected. Both the gourmet boy and Sister ate it happily.
“Thank you!”
He ate only all the meat perfectly and left to the TV room looking very satisfied.
By the way, I asked Sister to rank her favorite dishes for dinner this week.
No.1 : Hambrug
No.2 : Napolitan pasta
No.3 : Hotcake
Thank you for eating unknown dishes for 5 days in a row!
Even after Japanese week, my challenge with Mr. gourmet boy has continued secretly within me.
