The content and working hours of au pair work is different depending on the family.
Today, I’ll introduce our family’s case.
The timetable is like this.
Basically, the main duties are serving meals, dropping children off to their school or lesson and taking care of children.
However, I also do other housework, cleaning up rooms, washing clothes and so on, when host parents aren’t home or I think it’s better to do after checking the situation.
According taking care of children, I think it is a very different feeling to au pairs who live with families who have younger children.
When I read others au pair experiences on website, it was written that they felt it was hard to get their time because children came to them and would seek them out for play even if that time is free time for them.
But in our home case, children surely aren’t home in the daytime due to school and they are older, they have their time, so they hardly seek for playing with me.
In fact, there was a time when I was worried about what I could do to get closer to them.
My working hours is about 20 to 25 hours per week. (Sometime, there are exceptions.)
There is a whiteboard to write down family member’s plans for one week in the kitchen. I usually know my work time from that.
I thought it was good because it was simple and we can know all family member’s plans.
The work content and hours are decided but it is not so strict and it feels like I’m assigned a role as a member of the family.
Today, I’m still living with them as an au pair and as a member of family.
