Lunch box

Au pair

Preparing lunch for the children was my first work as an au pair.

The school where kids attend doesn’t have school lunches.
(It seems to be common that school lunches are not provided in Australia. However, in Japan, school lunches are provided every day at all public elementary schools.)

Therefore, children bring a lunch box every day.

You may feel a little bit heavy because you have to prepare the lunch box every day, also for children overseas.

However, our family’s lunch box is very simple.

I usually put fruits, vegetables, snacks and a sandwich in one lunch box.

I don’t have to cook some meals for the lunch box, I put some cut foods simply.

Baby cucumber is very convenient.

It is palm size and I can put it in the vegetable space even if I don’t cut it.

Also, sometimes, I just cut up whole carrots and put them in.

I was surprised when I first saw it, but when I actually tried it, it was surprisingly good.

The sandwich size depends on the day, I usually sandwich between two pieces of white bread, cut them in half, and divide them between the two children.

And then, I wrap it in a beeswax cloth and put it in the lunch box instead of wrapping it in clear disposable plastic wrap.

After that, I fill up water bottles and their lunch is ready.

In this way, it doesn’t take much time, the preparation can be completed in about 10 to 15 minutes.

Moreover, the school starts from 9:15 a.m., so we usually leave from home about 8:45 a.m.
(In Japan, elementary school starts at 8:15.)

I don’t need to be rushed due to the departure time like I wake up early every morning and make lunch.

At our home, time passes slowly even on weekday mornings.

【Small talk】

◎ Cherry tomato is a fruit?!!

Hello! I’m baby cucumber, the ace of our family.
Even though the cherry tomato is eaten as a vegetable in Japan, it is eaten as a fruit in Australia.
From Hotaru knew the fact, she always considers if she should put cherry tomatoes in the vegetable space or the fruit space when she is about to put them in the lunch box lol

As a side note, mini tomato is regarded as a fruit in Taiwan too. Namely, it’s difference depend on countries!
How about your country?
